our challenge this week was to create a ready-to-wear look that would be priced between $500-$700 which would be with the Elie Tahari aesthetic
this challenge made me want to rage quit. this was definitely not my cut of tea. Elie Tahari's design aesthetic doesn't really correlate with mine, and on top of that, I had to eliminate several design options right off the bat because I didn't want to over budget. 1) no intricate seam lines (that would push construction cost wayyy up) 2) no leather (leather is PRICEY!!) 3) no using 5000 different fabrics (more fabrics=more cost)
ANYWAYS
I realized that I ramble too much in my descriptions, so I'll try and keep this as simple as possible (probably not going to happen)
First and foremost, I priced my look based on how much actual garments found on the Elie Tahari site costs and just divided/multiplied roughly by how much fabric I would use, because I'm insane and I take myself wayyy to seriously. Case in point, I think I spent more time on the Elie Tahari site then I did designing...[link]
I *literally* could not design a dress, so I opted for separates. And YES this is within Elie Tahari's design aesthetics, because I decided to do what I do best, so instead of designing FOR Elie Tahari, I instead found some design elements from Elie Tahari that "agree" with my design aesthetic(links below!)
I opted for a traditional style "color blocking" but instead of color, I used fabrics. The sleeves are inspired by some shirts that are also in the Elie Tahari collection. The shirt is asymmetrical, with the back portion being slightly longer than the front. The top portion is black leather (like this [link]), the rest of the shirt is black stretch georgette (like this [link]) . The sleeves go from leather to lace to silk chiffon (like this [link])
Pants (inspired by [link][link]) The pants are a mix between the two links, I decided to do a skinny-leg pant with the same print as this but in a different color. Fabric is [link])
Accessories: Nine West Dark Silver Glitter Justine Heel [link], Nine West Anthracite Leather Botkier for Nine West, Jackson [link], jewelry (designed by me) giant faux gem cocktail ring, statement gem earrings
for reference, I used the original website images for lace and the print [link] and [link] respectively
EDIT: WHOOPS I forgot to price this. The top is approximately $300, and the pants $300, give or take $100 for construction costs, so I'm in budget!! XD
